English Landscape Painting
Constable, Gainsborough, Turner and the long shadow of the picturesque.
English Landscape Painting
A meditation on tree, sky, and water — and how British painters of the long eighteenth century invented, almost accidentally, the very idea of landscape as a story we choose to live inside.
Drawn almost entirely from the gallery’s Waterhouse bequest, the installation pairs the sublime drama of the Northern valleys with the quiet pastorals of Suffolk and an unforgettably atmospheric final room of late Turner watercolours.
